Well what do we make of that? Where the bleeding hell do we start? At the back where they resembled the worse defence any of us have ever seen, and coming from Cov fans who have watched Adam Fricking Virgo at centre back that is some statement. Or do we start upfront where Rooney looked like a player who would struggle to get in our side and Defoe who couldn’t trap a bag of cement?

In the middle facing three was Barry and Lampard, the space the three German midfield exploited was farcical, however, it wasn’t just offensively the three worked so well, when the English had the ball they pressured the player and the space and gave England no easy options. The important space between the midfield and the defence was Germany territory all game, the defence facing the Germans front three were obviously loathed to go into it, other than Terry for the first goal, WTF, and Barry couldn’t retreat back into that area otherwise he would be leaving Lampard against Germanys middle three. Additionally, how many long balls did the midfield resort to? Credit to the Germans for denying us space
The Slovenia game has a lot to answer for, we played a poor version of the type of teams these players play every week in the Prem, that is why Upson and Terry could get away with their last ditch tackle stuff and get lauded for it. Slovenia’s front two were the sort of big slow lumps that we need one of, but no one in their right mind would play two of them even in the Championship. However, the Germans don’t play 2 useless lumps upfront they play three fluid, dynamic attacking players who can run the arse off two slow, immobile centre backs, we know that Fabio because we watched them tear the slow Aussies apart a couple of weeks ago. The two wide players prevented the English full backs from overlapping and when they did we were often left 3 on 3 at the back
Terry is a slow centre back who uses his heart to win a lot of last ditch tackles, however, when he needs to use his brain he isn’t good enough and needs a brain along side him to back him up. Upson is a slow centre back who isn’t as brave as Terry, thus, he does the Terry role at West Ham, but he is also pretty brain-dead and also needs a brain alongside him. Two brain dead centre backs together leads to the first goal. I have never seen two similar centre backs play together before and they complemented each other as well as chocolate sauce and vinegar.
I do feel for Defoe and Rooney, but come on, Defoe needs a big man to do his donkey work as his work outside of the box is limited, his control and passing are poor and unless the ball is played into the box the guy is a passenger. Rooney needs movement, he needs people moving in and around him, but lets not call a spade a tractor the guy was very very poor.
I’ve been saying this for ages, 442 doesn’t work against a team who play 433 with movement, pace and fluidity, that is how the top teams play these days as the midfield battle is so crucial to who wins, hardly anyone plays two in a unison like we do, because its time at the highest level has gone. The opposition in the qualifiers was poor so we got to the world cup believing that the system worked, I’m sorry if we had played a competitive game against the Dutch, Germans or Spanish earlier in the process we would have been taught a lesson we could have learnt from.
